During the month of January 1985 Avraham Sternklar underwent some extensive surgery at the local Plainview Hospital. Recovery was a bit slow but complete thanks to the care given to him by his wife Evelyn. No wonder her middle name is Florence.... The composition, appropriately entitled THANKS was dedicated to her. It was completed on March 15, 1985 and slightly amended again on May 4, 1986. The premiere performance took place at the South Huntington Library on June 6, 1986 during a LICA concert. The composition is improvisational in character; it is at once dreamy and free as well as dramatic and intense. Unusual meters prevail. The piece begins in 5/4 time -- a favorite of mine. I like the circular feel of a five-beat measure as opposed to the angular symmetry of the usual 4/4 time. In addition, numerous cadential and cascade-like passages contribute further to the picturesque feel of this quasi-romantic-impressionistic work. Video Copyright 2011 view3d.tv - Daniel Sternklar.
